Our book group met on Wed. May 2, 2018 at 6:30 pm at a member's house in Endicott.  We discussed the book, "My Italian Bulldozer", by Alexander McCall Smith.  (He is the best-selling author of "No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency" series.)   This book is a novel about one man'sadventures in the Italian countryside. We all agreed that the book was an easy read, like a summer beach novel.   Most of us, 5,  enjoyed the book for this reason.  But 2 of our groupdid not like the book at all: too fluffy! After reviewing a number of books for our next read; we decided on "Time and Again"...

Book Club for March

The Book Vault Book Club met on March 21, 2018, at a member's house. We had to reschedule from March 14 due to snowy and slippery roads. We discussed the book, "The Alienst", by Caleb Carr. This is an historical crime thriller, that takes place in 1896 NYC, and includes many famous figures of society, including Theodore Roosevelt, and J.P. Morgan.   The alienst, known as a psychologist today, helped to solve murders by a serial killer. Four of us read the book in full, and three didn't finish it. The four that read the entire book liked the historical part of the story, as well as the author's...

August Book Group at The Book Vault

The Book Vault's monthly book group discussed the book, "The Little Paris Bookshop", by Nina George, for it's Aug. read. The critics raved about this book! The book elicited mostly neutral comments from our group, "it was a light read about life, love, friendship, and books". There were also many good quotes in the book about life, death, and friendship. But 2 of our members did not like the book. One actually "despised" the book. She didn't like the main premise of the book that the main character of the story, the book seller, did not read the good-bye letter from his lover for over 20 years....

BOOK GROUP AT THE BOOK VAULT

We held our June book discussion group on Wed. June 1 at The Book Vault. We discussed the book, "The Hound of the Baskervilles", by Arthur Conan Doyle. We all liked the book and found it scary. Two of us have seen several of the numerous movies made from the book: the 1939 version with Basil Rathbone; the 1988 version with Jeremy Brett; and the most recent version from 2012 with Benedict Cumberbatch. For our July read we selected a book from a recent NY Times book review; "Dead Wake", by Eric Larson.  It tells of the last voyage of the Lusitania, the passenger liner sunk by a German torpedo...

BOOK GROUP AT THE BOOK VAULT

We had our monthly  book group at The Book Vault on Wed. May 4.  We discussed the book, "Garlic and Sapphires", by Ruth Reichle. Most of us liked the book, since it was humorous and well-written.   The author, who worked as a NY Times restaurant critic,  dressed-upand portrayed different characters when she went into the NYC restaurants to eat, so the owners wouldn't recognize her and give her specialized treatment. We chose the book, "Hound of the Baskervilles", by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to read for our June read.  It is a classic Sherlock Holmes mystery/thriller.  It is also...

Jan. 2016 Book Group at The Book Vault

We discussed the book, "Go Set A Watchman" by Harper Lee at our Jan. 6 book group. Although we liked the book, and Lee's writing, we all agreed that her first book, "To Kill a Mockingbird" was much better. "Watchman" could have used some editing at the end. For our next read on Feb. 3, we selected "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett. It's about African-American maids working in white households in Mississippi during the early 1960's. This is the author's first novel. This continues the theme of racism and segregation from Jan. read. Please contact Christine if you want to join the group at chris6nisk5@yahoo.com
